In general Computer sciences the study of computers and computing concepts. Many people think of Computer Science as coding or programming. But this is not true Computer science constitutes the study of both study of both software and hardware components of computers. The Department of Computer Sciences defines Computer Science as “study of computers and computational systems.” 1. But what is a computer? Well a computer is any electronic device that has the capability of storing and processing data.

Computers have begun a long time before the invention of modern computers. The first computer was the abacus although it was not a called a computer. The abacus was used to perform arithmetic calculations. Although the word computer was used for the first time in the 17th century to denote people who performed mathematical calculations with their hands as their profession 2. The first mechanical calculator was invented by Wilhelm Schickard 3. The first mechanical computer was invented by Charles Babbage in 1837 and known as the “Analytical Engine” 4. But the first programmable computer called as “Z1” was invented by Konrad Zuse between 1936 and 1938 5. Computer have been evolving ever since. The first computer would occupy a whole complete room, but now a days we have a computer which fits into our pockets.

The study of computer science is made up of many branches. Some of them are as follows: Artificial intelligence, Software engineering, Programming, Computer graphics etc. 6. Artificial intelligence can be defined as the ability of a computer to thinks on its on without any human interference. It is the intelligence shown by computers. Software engineering is the process of designing or developing applications according to the customers’ needs. Programming is the process of writing programs for computers. Computer graphics are images, pictures or videos made using computers 7.

Computer science constitutes a rage of topic from theoretical studies of algorithms to the practical issues of implementing computing systems in both hardware and software 8. The Computing Sciences Accreditation Board identifies four areas which are crucial for discipline of computer science 9. The four areas are as follows: -theory of computation, algorithms and data structures, programming methodology and languages, and computer elements and architecture 10.
The Theory of computation focuses on answering the fundamental questions about what can be computated and what is required to perform those computations 11. Algorithms and Data structures is the study of commonly used computational method and their efficiency while performing the computation 12. Programming methodology and languages is the area which constitutes the branch of computer science that deals with design implementation, analysis and classification of programming language and their features 13. Computer elements and architecture
is the conceptual design and fundamental operational structure of a computer system 14.

The use of computer has reduced the difficulties of our lives. Computer make difficult and time-consuming tasks easy and also saves time. It has altered the way we lead our daily lives. They have become a vital part in our daily life. Computers help us in storing huge chunks of data, perform complex arithmetic problems and many more. Computing is being use in a number of fields. For example, in the medical field biologists use computers to try different sequences for DNA, so that they could edit the DNA of living organisms without any problem in real life. Computer also allowed us to communicate with people.They ave overall all made our lives a lot easier than it should have been.

But computers are not perfect. It has its own share of disadvantages also. Some of the disadvantages of computers are that the data stored in a computer is not so secure because anyone can hack into our computers and steal valuable information. Some malicious software can also steal our data. It costs a lot of money to remove such viruses from the computer. The use of computers has reduced the ability of humans to solve simple problems. Many people also waste time by playing games on computers an doing unnecessary things. They have made us lazy. Cyberbullying is also an important problem. Cyberbullying is the harassment of people through online communications.

In conclusion computer science is the study of computers and computing concepts. Computers have been used since a long period of time and have evolved from huge computers to pocket sized computers. Computer have a lot of advantages and disadvantages. They can be used to store valuable data, perform calculations etc. The information stored may not be secure. People become lazier as they get addicted to computers.
