The essay Colonialist Criticism by Chinua Achebe displays an attack on the remaining colonialism of colonies that are not of African culture critiquing the African literature. Most of the African writers do make write their own literature and text. After they write and create, their works then goes through the western community for more scrutiny. The colonialism, in this case, shows how every African written work has to go through the European community for further analysis but their own written works does not need any opinions or further examination through the African community. It proves how one sided colonialism through the Western community is. African writers are always implied to be accomplished in literature and writing, their work must meet the setup criterion that is critically made by the western community. “African writers must meet the criterion said by the profound European writer” (Chrisman & Williams, 2015). The African author writes text to be read and within the text messages to the African community but the Europeans will come and do an extensive analysis on the text that was written by the Africans. Because the Europeans read the literature hey become judgmental on their written work. While the European community is analyzing and judging the work done by the African community, they always keep in mind of being the superior community.
Their analysis emphases more on giving out and stating that ‘Europeans are more superior compared to Africans’. They bring out the idea that Europeans are more superior than African communities with them being advanced and more intelligent while the Africans being more inferior than them (Dabashi, 2017). Because of this, the Europeans think that they know almost everything on the African community literature, culture, art and the Africans ways of life. Achebe now sees the Colonialist Criticism doings in the whole notion that the African text writers are incomplete of the European and that some outsiders from the African culture know the Africans community writing better than the actual African writers that live in the country. He believes that this is wrong and through a focused lens he sees the disparity and the big gap of judgement amongst the Africans and the European colonies.
The writer of the text does not approve the European colonial prejudice. This refers to the practice of ruling while still discriminating others, while still comparing the African art, culture and literature with the European community. Achebe discusses that any “African literature by the African community should not by any means be judged or even compared with the canonical literature since it has its own peculiarity and particularity” (BachelorandMaster). The mask brought out in the European civilization does not even understand or know the critical history of the African community and that they should leave them live on their own (Dabashi, 2017). So in these Chinua Achebe claims that the African community is well populated and that they should write their real and own history challenging to what a ready has been done. Chinua argues that “if by any means a text written by an African is judged by the European community and on their perspective, the text doesn’t get the right and quality evaluation hence the essence of the text is killed” (Chrisman & Williams, 2015). Reading this text by Chinua, it rises very important issues which are sought out by the European colonialism and shows how the African writers are influenced by the European group. The Europeans analyzing the African writer’s texts and leave them to live on their own. Reading this Colonialist Criticism makes any reader rethink reading Orientalism. Orientalism, a book written by Edward in 1978, basically discusses Orientalism as well as defining it as the west being more superior than the east community (Dabashi, 2017). This comprises of people and the societies whom live in places such as North America, Asia and the Middle East. As per Said, “Orientalism which refers to the western scholarships in the Eastern world, is inextricably tied to the imperialist nations and societies which produce it” (Said). Orientalism works as a buffer to power and politics.
According to Said, in the Middle East community, economic, social and cultural practices of the governing Arab communities show that they are more grand and who have by all means internalized all the romanticized Arab culture which was created by the British, French and the American Orientaliists. Some examples of this are the key and analysis of the colonial literature written by Joseph Conrad which combnes people, place, and time into a story of journey and event in an unusual land. After reading the text by Chinua makes a reader rethink reading the other text by Said. The two texts have a profound relationship in explaining the concepts of the European nations sitting on other communities writings” (Chrisman ; Williams, 2015). The two works bring out a more understood superiority which is thought to exist within the European community with the other communities especially the African community being inferior and said to be the small brothers. After, reading the work done by Chinua makes a reader reconsider reading the other work done by Said.
The short story of Sabine starts with the Justine antagonist with the narrative voice of Shabine. At this point, it is not well known as to why she carries such kind of tone, nor it is not even known to whom she directs the kind of tone too. It is at the end of the story seen that she is addressing a certain character in the story that throughout the whole story remains nameless. The character has watched her for a quite long time from a mango tree. This brings the case to be more interesting to mention. This refers to Julie mango tree whose fruit names bears the names of a female being (Chrisman ; Williams, 2015). The story opens up with the narrator critically explaining that she has a ferry temper which she does unleash when she is tormentors when she is more provoked. This story is more giving the early years of Justine before her two sons are born and bring into the light. The narrative voice brought out by Shabine give the readers a concept to reconsider going back and reading the concepts which are put onward by Orientalism.
The most interesting things in the ideals are that they explore the different aspects of cultural diversities. He talks about beauty in the text. Beauty in this context does not mean the personal beauty in the person himself but talks about the beauty in the actual sense of having a more perfect figure and the features of personal beauty. It talks about the sense and the form of a person being too satisfied of himself and the continent from where he comes from. These standards have a connection with colonialism battle, which implies that the Europeans should leave the Africans to be proud of themselves and be proud of the literature that is written.
