P1 – Outline the function of the main cell components
Mitochondria Mitochondria is the energy source of a cell, they are small structure made up of two membranes and a matrix. The function of mitochondria is to perform cellular respiration. This is when the mitochondria takes nutrients from a cell and then turns it into energy.
Endoplasmic reticulum (rough and smooth) The rough endoplasmic reticulum has millions of membranes bounded with ribosomes, which is involved with the production, folding, quality and despatch of proteins. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is seen with fat manufacture, metabolism and hormone production.
Golgi apparatus The golgi apparatus has four functions: to modify proteins and fats, to process materials to be removed from cells, make and secrete mucus and to package products in vesicles for transport.
Lysosomes Lysosomes helps with the digestives system and removes waste.they contain digestive enzymes. The lysosome digest weak organelles, food particles and viruses or bacteria.
Cell membrane The function of a cell membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. As well as controlling what comes in and out of the cell.
Nucleus The function of the nucleus is to control all activity within the cell and contains genetic material (DNA) nucleic acids.
Cytoplasm In a cell the function of the cytoplasm is to keep all other organelles in their place without it the cell would be deflated.
