The human body requires many vitamins that are very important for human body. Vitamins are very important for human body development and prevention of diseases. Vitamin deficiencies are global problem. Mostly vitamin deficiencies remain unknown but long term deficiencies can cause many diseases to human body.
Vitamin deficiencies can cause many diseases. When vitamins are not part of diet on regular bases it can cause miserable condition and make the body weak and prone to diseases.

The term vitamin describes a small group of organic compounds that are absolutely necessary in the human diet. These vitamins and minerals are often referred to as micronutrients. They are not produced in body naturally so they could be obtained by proper diet. When vitamins are not part of diet for a long time they can cause many health problems like skin diseases, digestion problems and dementia. Vitamin deficiency effects every human being and of every age. Short-term vitamin deficiencies can be cured easily with proper diet but long-term vitamin deficiencies needs a lot of time to be cured with proper diet and supplements.
Types of Vitamin Deficiency
Vitamin deficiency can be categorized into two types:
Primary or short-term deficiency
Primary deficiency is when an inadequate vitamin intake causes a person to become weak. It is caused due to lack of necessary vitamins from diet and it can be easily cured by proper diet and supplements.

Secondary or long-term deficiency
If a deficiency is caused by lifestyle or disease is called secondary deficiency. When a person does not get minimal sun exposure it’ll cause vitamin D deficiency. This deficiency can affect the calcium absorption needed for healthy bones.
Effects of vitamin deficiency
Here are some effects caused by vitamin deficiency
Iron deficiency
The most common deficiency is iron deficiency which cause anemia. This is blood disease which causes weakness and other symptoms. Iron is found in foods. Iron helps in making red blood cells. When there is iron deficiency, body produce less blood cells and these blood cells are weaker. These red blood cells do not provide sufficient oxygen to tissues and organs.
Vitamin A deficiency
Vitamin A is important for eyes and productivity of men and women. It also strengthens immune system against infections. Vitamin A deficiency is cause of blindness in children.
Thiamine (Vitamin B-1) deficiency
Another common deficiency occurs with thiamine, also known as vitamin B-1. Vitamin B-1 is an important part of your nervous system. It also helps your body turn carbohydrates into energy as part of your metabolism.
Vitamin B-1 deficiency can result in:
• weight loss
• fatigue
• confusion
• short-term memory loss
• muscle damage

Niacin (vitamin B-3) deficiency
Vitamin B-3 is vitamin that converts food into energy. Pellagra is caused by vitamin B-3 deficiency. Pellagra causes diarrhea and skin diseases. Vitamin B-3 is found in animal proteins and in peanuts.
Folate (vitamin B-9) deficiency
Vitamin B-9 helps the body create red blood cells and produce DNA. It also helps in brain development and nervous system functioning. Folic acid is the synthetic form found in supplements or fortified foods.
Folate is especially important for fetal development. It plays a crucial role in the formation of a developing child’s brain and spinal cord. Folate deficiency can lead to severe birth defects, growth problems, or anemia.
Cobalamin (vitamin B-12) deficiency
Vitamin B-12 helps body to create red blood cells. This deficiency is common in old people, diabetes patients and in those who have gastric surgery.
A deficiency in this vitamin may cause pernicious anemia. This is a type of anemia caused by a decreased ability to absorb B-12 efficiently. Pernicious anemia is more common in people with autoimmune disorders and inflammatory or digestive diseases. Symptoms of vitamin B-12 deficiency are dizziness, shortness of breath, weight loss, nausea or poor appetite, sore, red, or swollen tongue and pale or yellowish skin.
Calcium deficiency
Calcium is necessary for bones and teeth. Calcium deficiency is very serious problem it can’t be diagnosed early but it cause serious health problems. It cause weak bones and loss of teeth and many other health issues.
Vitamins deficiencies can be mild and can be deadly if ignored for a long period of time. All vitamins deficiencies cause serious problems to human body and they can be fatal for human life. So, with proper diet and supplements we can avoid vitamins deficiencies.
